Tucked in the Trees ~ As many of you know, I photograph houses for this page by walking through historic districts with my camera when traveling around the country. I always shoot my photos from the public right-of-way to avoid trespassing. One of the challenges in getting photos is that clear views of many wonderful houses are obscured by trees, like this Queen Anne style house in Owego, New York. I have lots of photos in my files that I haven’t shared because of this issue. So, I’ve decided to create a new post category, called “Tucked in the Trees.”
The porch columns and railings appear to have been reworked at some point, possibly simplifying the original treatment, but the prominent gable retains all its Queen Anne details. These include the stepped gable form, patterned shingle siding, and bowed oriel window.
Architectural style identification is covered in depth in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, the Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.” Twenty-five architectural styles and types are described and illustrated with hundreds of color photos in Chapter 2.
