Providence Queen Anne Style

Queen Anne Style, Providence, Rhode Island.

I’m in Providence for a program on historic French wallpapers at the RISD Museum today so I thought I’d share a local house.

This house, built c. 1885, is Queen Anne in style. Although Providence is justly renowned for its Colonial-era and Early Republic homes, the city has a wealth of wonderful Victorian-era homes as well.

American Queen Anne emerged from the English Queen Anne style and developed its own distinctive characteristics. Typical features of the style seen here are the use of patterned shingle and clapboard for different areas of the house, bay windows and varied window sizes, round and octagonal towers, and prominent chimneys.

Understanding the style of a house is the essential first step in developing a restoration plan that prioritizes the preservation and restoration of character-defining features while making changes necessary for modern life in an old house.

More than two dozen full-color photos illustrate the Queen Anne style in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
