Nottoway is Gone

Nottoway is Gone. Nottoway Plantation overlooked the Mississippi River in White Castle, Louisiana, for 166 years. Yesterday it was destroyed by fire.

The gorgeous Italianate style mansion was designed by New Orleans’ architect Henry Howard for John H. Randolph and completed in 1859. It was the largest surviving plantation house on the river and a singular architectural gem.

Long recognized as symbols of Southern culture, the historic houses of the plantation south are also monuments to the fine craftsmanship and labor of the often-enslaved carpenters who built them and the enslaved people whose labor paid for these beautiful buildings. 

One of the finest creations of Howard, Randolph, and these black Americans can no longer tell us its complicated story, an important part of our nation’s terrible and beautiful history. This is more than the loss of a beautiful building, so much more…
