The best way to learn about historic houses is to look at them closely, and the most fun way to look at them closely is to do a puzzle showing a wonderful historic house! So, we made a unique and interesting collection of Historic House Puzzles for you to enjoy!

The Brewmaster’s Castle

The Christian Heurich Mansion, also known as the Brewmaster’s Castle, was designed by architect John Granville Meyers and built in 1892โ€“1894 for Christian Heurich. Heurich was a German immigrant and highly successful brewer in Washington, DC. The Romanesque Revival style house is located in the Dupont Circle neighborhood of DC.

Heurich lived in the house until his death at 102 in 1945. His wife gave the house to the DC Historical Society with occupied it until 2003. It was then purchased by the Heurich House Foundation and is open to the public as a historic house museum.

Boston architect Henry Hobson Richardson developed his Victorian era take on the 11th and 12th century Romanesque architecture of southern France, Spain and Italy in the 1870s Homes in the style were popular with Gilded Age “Captains of Industry.” They tend to be large and built of stone, often with carved or cast terra cotta ornament. Broad arches are a characteristic feature of the style, as are round or square towers.

Romanesque Revival is one of 25 styles and types covered in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
