The best way to learn about historic houses is to look at them closely, and the most fun way to look at them closely is to do a puzzle showing a wonderful historic house! So, we made a unique and interesting collection of Historic House Puzzles for you to enjoy!

The c. 1720 Stanley-Whitman House is an example of First-Period Colonial style. Early immigrants to America adapted building construction technology and traditions from their homelands to the different materials and conditions of the “new world.” This “saltbox” form with overhanging second story on the facade was one of the types developed by English builders in New England.
The house is an early example of the use of single-hung windows instead of the casements that were more commonly used. As with casements in the period, the small diamond-shaped glass panes are held together with lead, not wood muntins.
The Stanley-Whitman House is now a living history center and museum that teaches through the collection, preservation, research, and dynamic interpretation of the history and culture of early Farmington, Connecticut. First-Period Colonial is one of 25 historic architectural styles described and illustrated in Chapter 2 of Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.
