I spotted this Italianate style house while driving through Stockton Springs, Maine, and something about it drew me to stop and take a photo. Many small towns in Maine have neglected or abandoned houses that look like they belong in an Andrew Wyeth painting. Not surprising, since he often painted similar houses in the many decades the Wyeth family summered on the Maine coast.
I photograph these houses in the hope that eventually I’ll drive by and see the house freshly restored and have a new “before and after” house to share with all of you.
Although neglected, this house looks like a good candidate for restoration. It has a slate roof that appears in good condition (though the sheet metal flashing will need attention soon) and retains its exterior trim elements and porches. Hopefully the interior retains integrity as well. Only time can tell what the future holds for this house, but hopefully I’ll be able to share its restoration one day.
All stages of the restoration process are covered in “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
