This Week’s Puzzle ~ Dresden, Maine, Georgian Colonial

The best way to learn about historic houses is to look at them closely, and the most fun way to look at them closely is to do a puzzle showing a wonderful historic house! So, we made a unique and interesting collection of Historic House Puzzles for you to enjoy!

Dresden, Maine, Georgian Colonial

This beautiful example of late-18th century Georgian Colonial architecture is in Dresden, Maine. The house was built in 1765 for Captain James Patterson in what was then called Pownalborough, Maine.
The heavy window frames show that the construction of the house used the plank and frame method common in eastern Massachusetts in the 18th century. This is typically only found in Maine where settlers from that region built houses – primarily along the Kennebec River as this house is.

Plank and frame construction does not use exterior wall studs. Instead, thick planking is nailed to the timber frame and equally thick planks frame window and door openings on the exterior to stabilize the openings and provide the depth needed for sash and doors. Band moldings are added to the exterior planks to trim the openings.

More than 20 examples are included to illustrate the Georgian Colonial style in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.” Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our online shop at YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.

Our shop also carries select preservation and restoration titles by other authors. Save on cost and shipping with our multi-book combo packs! “Restoring Your Historic House” is also available in bookstores nationwide and from online retailers.
