Tucked in the Trees ~ A “Monterey” Spanish Colonial Revival House. In the early 20th century, a number of romantic revival house styles were popular in U.S. Many of them were drawn from European houses but two were more home-grown. These were the Colonial Revival style and its Spanish Colonial variant – not to be confused with the Mediterranean/Spanish Revival popular at the same time. Within the Spanish Colonial variant, there were several sub-types, including “Mission” and “Monterey.”
Tucked behind a massive tree, this 1934 house, in Palo Alto, California, is an example of the “Monterey” type. The cantilevered second story porch and low-pitched gable roof clad in clay tile are the defining characteristics of this variation. It gets its name from the California city where a number of colonial-era adobe houses with these features survive.
Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” explores 25 styles and types with character-defining features keyed to hundreds of color photos.
