Thanksgiving at Whitten House

A short video showing how we cook our annual Thanksgiving feast using traditional methods in the restored 1827 kitchen at Whitten House.

Cooking in this way gives me a sense of connection to the past, and a better understanding of how much easier our lives are today! For millennia, humans cooked on open fires, only moving the fire to a contained iron box lifted off the floor in the mid-19th century. In the 175 years since that transition started, we’ve largely forgotten how cooking was done before then.

The restoration of the 1827 kitchen at Whitten House, including reconstruction of the missing fireplace, hearth, and oven, is one of the Example Projects in “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”

Signed and personalized copies of the 720-page award-winning and bestselling hardcover book is available in our online bookshop at YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.
