This Week’s Puzzle ~ F.L.W. Tudor Revival

The best way to learn about historic houses is to look at them closely, and the most fun way to look at them closely is to do a puzzle showing a wonderful historic house! So, we made a unique and interesting collection of Historic House Puzzles for you to enjoy!

F.L.W. Tudor Revival

The Nathan G. Moore House in Oak Park, Illinois, was Frank Lloyd Wright’s first independent commission after leaving the office of Adler and Sullivan in 1893. As completed in 1895, it was a rather conventional Tudor Revival style house of the period with half-timbering and stucco on the upper stories above a brick base. The design was highly derivative of historic British architecture, and the client was very pleased. Wright was not. As young architect with a growing family, just starting out on his own, pleasing the client came first.

A fire in December 1922 provided an opportunity for Wright to redesign the house in a stylized version of Tudor Revival that incorporated Gothic Revival, Mayan, and Sullivanesque ornament with residual Tudor elements. Nearly 30 years after the first design, Wright now had an international reputation as an architectural genius and generally pleased himself first. The reconstruction was completed in 1923 and remains largely intact today.

Understanding the style of a house is the essential first step in developing a restoration plan that prioritizes the preservation and restoration of character-defining features while making changes necessary for modern life in an old house.

Many color photos are used to illustrate the character-defining features of the Tudor Revival style in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.” Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our online shop at YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.
