This Week’s Puzzle ~ Christmas in Kennebunk

The best way to learn about historic houses is to look at them closely, and the most fun way to look at them closely is to do a puzzle showing a wonderful historic house! So, we made a unique and interesting collection of Historic House Puzzles for you to enjoy!

Christmas in Kennebunk

This lovely Italianate style house decorated for the season is located on Kennebunk, Maine’s, Summer Street. The street is a living museum of American domestic architecture from the Colonial through Colonial Revival eras, including most of the popular Victorian era styles in between. At this time of year, many of the homes are elaborately decorated for the holiday season.

The Italianate and Gothic Revival styles introduced romantic asymmetrical silhouettes to American homes, with towers, porches, bay windows, and other elements that broke up the simple rectangular box of earlier houses. But the Italianate style also appeared in restrained symmetrical forms, as in this house.

Understanding a house’s style will help you identify which features are character-defining so you can prioritize their preservation. Italianate is one of 25 styles, and types described and illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our online bookshop at YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.

It is the perfect holiday gift for the old house lover on your list! Our shop also carries select preservation titles by other authors. Save on cost and shipping with our multi-book combo packs! “Restoring Your Historic House is also available in bookstores nationwide and from online retailers.
