Before and After ~ Victorian Tile Restoration. The Victorians loved elaborate patterning, and ceramic tile was wildly popular for producing such patterns on floors. Such floors could be laid with multicolor encaustic tiles, with a pattern in each tile, or solid color tiles with the pattern created by different tiles in combination, as here.
This floor had been covered by glued down carpet and left with glue residue over a century’s worth of dirt and grime once the carpet was removed. Ceramic tiles by of this type by Minton and other potters in the UK were shipped all over the globe. This example is located in England, but identical tiles can be found in 19th century homes and public buildings in the United States.
