Before & After ~ Transitional Federal to Greek Revival in Maine. This house is an excellent example of what is possible with determination and commitment.
A prolonged period of neglect resulted in significant water infiltration and rot in this c. 1840 transitional Federal to Greek Revival style house. When the trees and shrubs were leafed out, the house was nearly invisible. As generally happens in these conditions, the greenery trapped moisture and prevented the sun and wind from drying the house, accelerating the deterioration.
Fortunately, the house is located in a local historic district with a protective ordinance and to guide its exterior restoration. In addition to extensive structural repairs, many historic interior features were also preserved while the house got all new electric, plumbing, and HVAC systems.
“Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” was written to help people who want to restore a house with sensitivity to its character-defining features, like this example.
Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our online shop at YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.
Our shop also carries select preservation and restoration titles by other authors. Save on cost and shipping with our multi-book combo packs!
“Restoring Your Historic House is also available in bookstores nationwide and from online retailers.
