A Wonderful Queen Anne House

A wonderful Queen Anne style house in Wiscasset, Maine. The style was developed in England and made its way to America in the 1870s. Initially used for grand mansions, it was eventually used for houses of all sizes. The projecting window in the broad gable, with its stylized half-timbering effect above and strap-work panels at each side relate this c. 1885 house to the English Queen Anne style. The ample porch with turned posts and scroll-cut brackets and the combined patterned wood shingle and clapboard siding are more of the American Queen Anne style that emerged from the English version.

Queen Anne is one of 25 styles and types described and illustrated with hundreds of color photos in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
