The best way to learn about historic houses is to look at them closely, and the most fun way to look at them closely is to do a puzzle showing a wonderful historic house! So, we made a unique and interesting collection of Historic House Puzzles for you to enjoy!

English Arts & Crafts Style

In England, in the later nineteenth century, there was a turn away from the highly decorative styles of the Victorian period. Machine-made and mass-produced ornamentation drew particular criticism, and a return to a simpler, hand-crafted aesthetic developed. The English Arts and Crafts movement led the way in architecture and furnishings, with American designers quickly developing the Americanized Craftsman style, a close cousin to English Arts & Crafts.

Craftsman style houses were built in great numbers in the U.S., particularly after 1900. Examples of English Arts & Crafts style are much less common here. This Asheville, North Carolina house strongly shows the influence of English architects like C.F.A. Voysey. There are a number of English A&C houses in Asheville, likely influenced by the architecture of Biltmore Village.

The village, adjacent to the main entrance of the Biltmore Estate, built by George W. Vanderbilt. Biltmore House, designed to look like French Renaissance Chateau, remains the largest private home in America. Vanderbilt created the village to provide housing and services for the estate workers. It was designed to reflect the qualities of an English country village.

Understanding the style of a house is the essential first step in developing a restoration plan that prioritizes the preservation and restoration of character-defining features while making changes necessary for modern life in an old house.

More than 50 color photos illustrate the Craftsman style in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.” Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our online shop at YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.
