Modernism is Historic! Like most American architectural styles since European settlement, the roots of Modernism are European – developed in Austria, France, and Germany around 1900.
A handful of American architects, like Frank Lloyd Wright, were paying attention to what was happening across the Atlantic and were incorporating Modernist ideas into their work. The rise of the Nazis in Germany led to the immigration of most leading Modernists to America in the late 1930s. Once these architects began teaching in the leading architecture schools in the U.S., Modernist design rapidly became the norm.
The Modernist homes of the Post War period introduced new forms and materials to accommodate new ideas and ways of living. They were functionally suited to “modern life” and had forward-looking Mid-Century Modern design features. This wonderful example, built in 1941, is located in Amarillo, Texas.
“Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” covers houses built from c. 1730 to c. 1970 and includes the modern materials used in Mid-Century houses, which most restoration books do not address.
From style identification through designing your project and all the following stages, the book comprehensively guides homeowners through the restoration/rehabilitation of historic homes for 21st-century life while retaining historic character.
