This Week’s Puzzle ~ Illinois Italianate

The best way to learn about historic houses is to look at them closely, and the most fun way to look at them closely is to do a puzzle showing a wonderful historic house! So, we made a unique and interesting collection of Historic House Puzzles for you to enjoy!

Illinois Italianate

This 1868 Italianate style house in Morrison, Illinois, had a Craftsman style entry portico and sunroom added after 1912. There is evidence of an earlier full-width front porch that wrapped around the side where the sunroom is now. The low hipped roof with belvedere, arched window and door openings, and deep eaves with ornamental brackets are all character-defining features of the Italianate style. The fanciful brackets on this house are particularly wonderful.

Understanding the style of a house is the essential first step in developing a restoration plan that prioritizes the preservation and restoration of character-defining features while making changes necessary for modern life in an old house.

Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” illustrates and describes 25 historic styles and types, including the Italianate style, with character-defining features of each keyed to multiple color photos.

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our online shop at YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.
