The Daniel R. Wright House in Eutaw, Alabama, was built in 1847 in the Greek Revival Style. It is an L-shaped house with an inset porch that wraps around the south and east sides of the house. A deeper inset porch is located the north side of west wing of the L.
These large porches create outdoor living spaces that occupy nearly half the area covered by the roof. This much covered outdoor space is an adaption to the hot Southern climate that is not found in Northern houses of the same period. Also typical of houses built for the semi-tropical climate of the South is the use of piers to elevate the living spaces and allow airflow under the house for cooling.
Greek Revival is among the 25 architectural styles and types described and illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
