The George Boyd House is a spectacular Colonial Revival style summer cottage in Cape May, New Jersey. It was designed by Philadelphia architect Frank Seeburger and built in 1911.
America’s most enduring residential architectural style, the Colonial Revival started in the late 19th century and has never really gone away. It looked back to the Georgian, Federal, and Greek Revival styles as a product of the eclectic late Victorian period. It freely combined elements from all of them, often with elements of other Victorian-era styles.
The Boyd House is an exceptional example of the style, mixing elements of the Georgian, Federal, and Greek Revival styles. The large inset two-story porches at each end creatively adapt the Georgian Colonial form to the beachfront setting and less formal life lived in a summer cottage at the start of the 20th century.
Understanding the architectural style of your house should be the starting point for planning your restoration/rehabilitation project.
Colonial Revival is one of the 25 styles and types illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
