Historic “Tiny Houses”

Historic “Tiny Houses” ~ the Marshall Shotgun Row in Mobile, Alabama, built in 1903. The shotgun house form, a long single-room wide house, and its double shotgun variant came first to Louisiana from Hati at the start of the 19th century. Today, these historic “tiny houses” can be found throughout the Deep South.

There has been a lot of press in recent years about “tiny houses,” much of it seeming to suggest that small houses are a new idea. They aren’t. They have provided homes to people of modest means for centuries, particularly before the development of apartment houses at the end of the 19th century.

These houses were typically as simple as they were small except for a brief time during the Victorian era, when they got a little fancy. With steam mills inexpensively producing elaborate trim, virgin forests providing cheap lumber, and unlimited skilled immigrant labor competing for work, even a small house could get a front porch dolled up with a bit of the latest style.

“Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” was written to help anyone who wants to restore a house with sensitivity, covering all aspects of the process.
