The best way to learn about historic houses is to look at them closely, and the most fun way to look at them closely is to do a puzzle showing a wonderful historic house! So, we made a unique and interesting collection of Historic House Puzzles for you to enjoy!

I recently revisited the neighborhood where I went to college in Brooklyn, NY. For an 18-year-old from a little town in White Mountains of northern New Hampshire, the historic architecture of New York City was a revelation. It often felt like I was living in an Edward Hopper painting, as seen in this photo I took on my visit. During my college years, a Brooklyn brownstone was my dream house.
The rowhouse form was used extensively during the 19th century, providing housing for the rapidly expanding populations of eastern cities in the US. As the century progressed, rowhouses were clad in expressions of all the styles of the period. This block, in Brooklyn’s Clinton Hill neighborhood, has the arched and hooded openings, classical ornamentation, and bracketed cornices that define the Italianate style.
Whether your dream house is a Brownstone in Brooklyn, a Craftsman Bungalow in Peoria, A Colonial Cape in Vermont, or an Adobe Casa in Santa Fe, “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” will help you to understand what is historically significant about it and how to preserve and restore those features while adapting the house to modern life.
The Italianate style is one of 25 styles described and illustrated with multiple examples in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.” Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our online bookshop at YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.
Our shop also carries select preservation and restoration titles by other authors, including Virginia McAlester’s classic “A Field Guide to American Houses.” Save with our multi-book combo packs! “Restoring Your Historic House” is also available in bookstores nationwide.
