Winston-McAlpine-Hitt House

I spotted the c. 1880 Stick Style Winston-McAlpine-Hitt House while walking through historic Eutaw, Alabama. Many towns have neglected or abandoned houses. I photograph these houses in the hope that eventually I’ll go by and see the house freshly restored and have a new “before and after” house to share with all of you.

Although neglected, this Victorian era house looks like a good candidate for restoration. It has a new roof protecting the interior and retains many of its exterior trim elements and porches. The original windows are rough but clearly restorable. Hopefully the interior retains integrity as well.

The new roof gives me hope that someone has begun saving this beauty. Only time will tell what its future holds, but perhaps I’ll be able to share its restoration on here one day.

All stages of the restoration process are covered in “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our online shop at YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.

Select preservation titles by other authors including the classic “A Field Guide to American Houses” by Virginia McAlester are also available in our shop!
