Glessner House is a Romanesque Revival masterpiece by architect Henry Hobson Richardson. It was built in Chicago for John and Frances Glessner, who were wealthy and sophisticated collectors of British and American Arts & Crafts decorative arts. These tiles were made by English designer and tile maker William De Morgan. The house is well worth a visit! glessnerhouse.org
De Morgan was a long-time associate of William Morris and among the key figures in the English Arts & Crafts movement that emerged from the Aesthetic Movement in the 1880s. These tiles, installed in 1887, were later moved to the Glessner’s summer home in New Hampshire when the Chicago house was sold. In 2016, the tiles were returned to the house and restored to their original setting in the master bedroom.
Ceramic tile preservation, restoration, and replication is covered in detail in “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.” Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our online shop at YourHistoricHouse.com.
