This Week’s Puzzle ~ Kirtlington Park Ceiling

The best way to learn about historic houses is to look at them closely, and the most fun way to look at them closely is to do a puzzle showing a wonderful historic house! So, we made a unique and interesting collection of Historic House Puzzles for you to enjoy!

Kirtlington Park Ceiling

Kirtlington Park is an 18th-century Palladian country house in Oxfordshire, England. Largely constructed in 1742โ€“46, work on the interiors continued into the 19th century. The remarkable plasterwork in the dining room was executed by Thomas Roberts in 1748. It was widely regarded as one of the most beautiful Rococo rooms in England.

The stucco decoration exhibits a combination of Italian Baroque and early French Rococo motifs: masks, eagles, shells, scrolls, and trophies of fruit and flowers. Large-scale stuccowork came into vogue in England in the 1720s, when a number of skilled stuccadores arrived from northern Italy.

In 1931, The walls and ceiling were removed in 250 sections still attached to the wooden laths and timbers, and the floorboards were numbered and disassembled. The room was shipped to America and in 1955 it was installed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. After historic paint analysis in 1995, it was returned to the original color scheme seen here. Many art museums exhibit period rooms.

Visiting these spaces can educate you and inspire your restoration, and so can “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.” Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our shop at YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.
