Buckman Tavern, Lexington, Massachusetts. It is Patriots Day in Massachusetts and Maine, commemorating the Battle of Lexington and Concord in 1775. Built in 1710, Buckman Tavern was a gathering place for Captain Parker and his militia in the early morning hours of April 19, 1775, while they awaited the oncoming British Redcoat troops. Shortly after leaving the tavern to confront the British soldiers, “the shot heard ’round the world” was fired – starting the Revolutionary War.
The tavern’s interior appears today very much as it did in 1775, including the restored 18th-century taproom. It is now operated as a museum by the Lexington Historical Society.
Visiting historic house museums is a wonderful way to get inspiration for your home restoration projects. Restoration methods and materials used by museums are included among the approaches presented in “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
