Lubec, Maine, Queen Anne

A Queen Anne style house in Lubec, Maine. I stopped in the easternmost town in the U.S. last summer and discovered that one of my favorite houses there has a new paint scheme.

This lovely example of the Queen Anne style has a wonderful octagonal porch extension in the form of a gazebo. Porches extend across much of the front façade and the length of the rear ell. The gable and the intersecting bay window below provide an opportunity for more scroll-cut ornament. The combination of clapboard and patterned shingle siding is typical of the style.

Technological advancements in the wood products industry after the Civil War allowed the construction of wood-framed houses with complex forms and elaborate detail at reasonable prices for middle-class buyers.

Understanding the style of a house is the essential first step in developing a restoration plan that prioritizes the preservation and restoration of character-defining features while making changes necessary for modern life in an old house.

More than 50 color photos illustrate the Queen Anne style in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
