Historic Preservation and Affordable Housing. In the mid-1980s, this rundown Second Empire style house was rehabilitated for affordable housing in a pilot “Renovation Technology” program for non-traditional students at the local vocational college. It is where my life as a preservation professional began.
This photo was taken nearly 35 years after we did the work to save the building and create safe and affordable housing for three families.
Preservation is sometimes portrayed as elitist and only benefiting the well-to-do. In fact, thousands of units of affordable housing are preserved and created every year by rehabilitating historic buildings. In my career, I’ve worked on preservation projects that have resulted in hundreds of units of affordable housing for seniors and families.
“Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” is also a long-term result of my involvement with this 1980s project – and the many that followed it. More than 40 years’ experience shared in words, photos, and drawings.
