George and Julia Ferris Mansion

The Queen Anne style George and Julia Ferris Mansion in Rawlins, Wyoming was designed by Barber & Kluttz, an architectural firm of Knoxville, Tennessee, which published house design books used across the United States. Construction started in 1899 and was completed in 1903. In the 1940s, it was converted into an apartment house and eventually suffered from a period of neglect. Janice and David Lubbers bought the house in 1979 and spent 25 years restoring it.

The house has functioned as a bed and breakfast inn for many years. Many restorers have used the income from bed and breakfast use to help recover restoration costs. It is now a private home again.

Architect George F. Barber and his partners were prolific in providing over-the-top house designs to people trying to make a statement about their success. The National Register nomination for the house states, “The house is an excellent example of Queen Anne residential design. As the most ostentatious of the Victorian styles, Queen Anne was an appropriate idiom for Wyoming’s nouveau riche in mining and ranching.”

Whether a modest cottage or a grand mansion, all aspects of the restoration process are covered in “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our online shop at YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.
