The best way to learn about historic houses is to look at them closely, and the most fun way to look at them closely is to do a puzzle showing a wonderful historic house! So, we made a unique and interesting collection of Historic House Puzzles for you to enjoy!

The Salon Doré

The Salon Doré is now located at the Legion of Honor Museum in San Francisco. The room is one of the finest examples of French neoclassical interior architecture in a museum and the only complete example of a pre-Revolutionary Parisian salon on display anywhere. Designed during the reign of Louis XVI, it was originally installed as the principal reception room of an aristocratic mansion in Paris.
The Salon Doré has been moved six times, beginning in 1877, when the Hôtel de la Trémoille was razed during Haussmann’s modernization plan of Paris. The paneling was reinstalled in another grand house nearby. In 1905, the salon crossed the Atlantic to be centerpiece of a New York mansion. The room was next purchased by art dealers in 1936 and installed in their Manhattan gallery. In 1955, the room was installed in a California residence. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Rheem donated the salon to the Legion of Honor in 1959, where it has been reinstalled three times.

In 2013 – 2014, the room underwent comprehensive conservation, returning to its original form as a complete domestic interior with 18th-century. Historically accurate furniture was added to reflect the original inventory uncovered by research, giving insight into how these rooms were used in the years before the French Revolution.
