This partial leftover roll of 19th century wallpaper is in excellent condition and is a prime candidate for digital reproduction, as it will not need extensive work to recreate missing portions of the pattern. It comes from Whitten House and will be reproduced for use in the sitting room. Digital printing is a relatively new option for reproducing historic wallpapers and can often provide custom work at a lower cost than traditional methods allow. Computer design programs are used to recreate and color correct historic patterns from photographs—or wallpaper fragments—to be digitally printed onto rolls of paper.
Evergreene Architectural Arts is one of the firms digitally reproducing historic wallpapers, sometimes combining digital printing with more traditional methods to achieve certain effects. They generously provided images of their production process for “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.” The processes for screen printing, wood block printing, and digital printing reproduction wallpapers are all illustrated in Chapter 18.
