An Elegant Federal Style Mantel Detail.

This detail shot is of a Federal style mantel in a house built for a New England ship’s Captain in the 1808. The elliptical oval panel, reed detail, and delicate molding profiles are characteristic features of the Federal style. The floral element in the panel provides a bit of whimsey to the refined design. I am currently working on an article about this house for the January issue of Down East magazine.

Federal style is one of 25 historic architectural styles described and illustrated in Chapter 2 of Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners. Understanding the style of a house and will help you understand which features are character-defining so you can prioritize their preservation.
