A Colonial Revival “Restoration”

When the stock market crashed on October 24th, 1929, Helen Cummings of Skowhegan, Maine was living in Paris where her teenage children were studying art and music. Facing the sudden loss of resources, they returned to Maine and Mrs. Cummings established a chicken farm to help the family survive the depression while her husband worked to save the textile mill he operated. The family settled into a vacant 1790’s Cape, the Rowell Farm, and had coops built for 5,000 chickens.

Once the farm was operational, Mrs. Cummings set about “restoring” the house, as the term was understood at the time. Today the house is known as Red Farm and is being carefully preserved and restored to its appearance while occupied by two generations of the Cummings family. Red Farm is one of the 13 featured houses photographed by noted architectural photographer David Clough and presented between the how-to chapters of Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.
