A Gothic Revival Portico

This house was recently repainted in its historic colors based on microscopic paint analysis done by Sutherland Conservation & Consulting. Small samples of paints containing all the layers and a fragment of the underlying wood were taken from a number of locations on the building. These were cast in resin, forming cubes, and polished to expose all the layers of paint on the wood. Placed under a microscope at 100x to 400x magnification, it is possible to clearly see each layer of paint and even the individual grains of pigment. Different light types (UV, Ultraviolet) help identify paint components as they fluoresce differently depending on the material and light.

Gothic Revival is one of 25 historic architectural styles described and illustrated in Chapter 2 of Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners. Understanding the style of a house and will help you understand which features are character-defining so you can prioritize their preservation.
