A fabulous Craftsman style summer cottage on an island overlooking Portland Harbor in Maine. One of my favorite summer cottages, it was designed by the John Calvin Stevens firm, probably by John Howard Stevens, in the early 20th century.
The islands of Casco Bay have many 19th century cottages by J.C. Stevens, including some of the earliest surviving Shingle Style cottages. This cottage shows that the creativity of the Stevens firm did not diminish as the next generation embraced the styles of the new century.
Understanding the style of a house is the essential first step in developing a restoration plan that prioritizes the preservation and restoration of character-defining features while making changes necessary for modern life in an old house.
