Before & After ~ Conserved and restored decorative painting. The Victoria Mansion in Portland, Maine is one of America’s most significant historic house museums. It contains the only surviving intact interior by Gustave Herter including 90% of the original furnishings. https://victoriamansion.org/
Original wall and ceiling paintings by the Italian-born artist Giuseppe Guidicini, executed under Herter’s direction, remain in nearly all the rooms.
In recent years, the museum has had the decorative painting cleaned, stabilized, and restored in several rooms. This bathroom with its decoration inspired by ancient Roman wall decoration excavated at Pompeii was perhaps the most damaged. The “after” photo shows what is possible in the hands of experienced conservators.
Where historic decorative painting survives, its preservation should be a high priority. The preservation, restoration, or recreation of these treatments is covered in Chapter 18 of Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.
