One of my hopes for 2021 is that the Charles A. Jordan House in Auburn, Maine will be restored.
This beautiful Second Empire style house with a fabulous tower roof experienced a serious arson fire in 2019. Fortunately, the fire department was able to save the building, but the kitchen ell and tower were seriously damaged.
Although it has both fire and water damage, it can be restored and the owners are working toward that goal. An images of the house after the fire can be found in this newspaper article, which mistakenly says the house was “destroyed”: https://www.pressherald.com/…/fire-destroys-historic…/
The house has been stabilized and secured against the elements, awaiting restoration.
Second Empire is one of 25 historic architectural styles described and illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.” Understanding the style of a house and will help you understand which features are character-defining so you can prioritize their preservation.
