Before & After ~ The William H. Mason House

Before photo by SmartMLS, Inc.

Before & After ~ The William H. Mason House in Thompson, CT is a great example of what can be done to save a historic house with the right combination of knowledge and other resources.

This 1845 Gothic Revival gem has been one of America’s best known abandoned historic houses, slowly deteriorating over several decades in spite of having a rich and famous owner.

New owners have undertaken a spectacular restoration and I was fortunate enough to get a tour of the nearly completed project yesterday and talk with the talented craftspeople doing the work. My thanks to Evan Jones for the opportunity!

The house had been abandoned by the previous owner mid-renovation and then suffered significant water damage from a failed roof. It has taken significant resources of talent, knowledge, and money to save the house, which will open in the fall as a bed & breakfast inn and wedding venue. More info on the future of the house can be found at: www.williammasonhouse.com

I took lots of photos inside and out and will be sharing them on here in the coming months.

All the stages of restoration needed to save a house like the Mason House are covered in “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”

The 720 page award-winning and best-selling hardcover book is available in bookstores and from online retailers.
