An intact bathroom of the Victorian era still in use.
Installed when the house was built in 1896, this bathroom is located in the Colonial Revival style Dark Harbor House, which was built as a summer cottage on an island off the coast of Maine.
During the recent restoration of the house, several new bathrooms were installed for daily use and this time capsule was left intact with its plumbing repaired and updated.
The house is one of the 13 Featured Houses dating from 1760 to 1957 and ranging geographically from Maine the New Mexico. All were photographed by noted architectural photographer David Clough and are presented with historic and “before” photos between the how-to chapters of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
Working with antique plumbing fixtures and designing compatible new bathrooms for historic houses of different eras are both covered in the book.
The 720-page award-winning and best-selling hardcover book is available in bookstores nationwide and from online retailers.
