Before, During, & After

Before, During, & After ~ Victorian tile restoration at Nightingale House.

Check out this amazing recent Victorian tile restoration project by Isa Celik of Opus Tile Restoration in York, England, working with Walter Croft.

Encaustic and other types of floor tile became widely popular in the UK and the US during the second half of the 19th century. In many cases they were later covered over after being damaged and are waiting to be rediscovered and restored.

Isa says, “Due to previous building work approximately 5sm front section of hallway was missing. It took a few months to source all reclaimed tiles to match the existing. Edges and back of replacement tiles were cleaned and installed to match original pattern and borders. Floor was deep cleaned and sealed with drytreat.” Check out the Opus Tile Restoration page on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/OpusTile/

“Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” includes information on dealing with historic tile, including leads on finding appropriate replacement pieces. Fortunately, we have tiles restorers as talented as Isa here in the US as well.

The 720 page award-winning and best-selling hardcover book is now available in bookstores and from online retailers.

Signed and personalized copies are available directly from the author in our shop, https://yourhistorichouse.com/shop/.

Bookstores can order copies from W.W. Norton.
