The spectacular Carson Mansion in Eureka, CA was built by lumber baron William Carson in 1885. It is one of the most architecturally significant houses of the Victorian era in America, an absolute tour-de-force of wood ornamentation. As the primary port for the Redwood forest region of northern California, Eureka boomed in the second half of the 19th century, supplying much of the lumber that built San Francisco and other west coast cities.
The Italianate, Second Empire and Queen Anne houses of northern California have a particular exuberance, often exceeding the excesses seen on houses in the same styles elsewhere. Original trim elements are always character defining features of a house and should be preserved or restored if at all possible.
“Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” includes information on exterior trim repair and designing appropriate and compatible replacements for elements that have been lost.
Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our shop, YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.
