The Victorian love of elaborate patterning was carried into the 20th century by the Art Nouveau style that flourished from c. 1890 to c. 1910. Popular motifs in the decorative style were inspired by natural forms such as the sinuous curves of plants. A sense of dynamism and movement is often found in Art Nouveau decoration.

These tiles clearly illustrate those characteristics of the style. Tiles like these were often used around fireplaces or in pieces of furniture. Ceramic tiles by Minton and other potters in the UK were shipped all over the globe. This example is located in a palace in Bikaner, in the Great Indian Desert in northwest India and dates to the early years of the 20th century. Similar tiles can be found in American homes built at the same period.

Ceramic tile preservation, restoration, and replication is covered in detail in “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our shop, YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.

Our shop also carries select preservation and restoration titles by other authors. Save with our multi-book combo packs!
