A Greek Revival style shipbuilder’s house in Bath, Maine. This stunning Greek Revival style house was built on a hill overlooking the shipyard of its first owner on the banks of the Kennebec River. Progress on the many wooden tall ships constructed there could be monitored from the portico with its massive Corinthian columns. Remarkably, the house remains in the ownership of the family that had it built.
The shipbuilding families of Bath built a number of significant houses in a range of styles during the 19th and early 20th century. These houses remain as testaments to the importance of shipbuilding and maritime trade to the history of the city and the state of Maine. Many of the modest houses of the shipyard workers also remain, telling more of the story.
Understanding the style of a house and will help you understand which features are character-defining so you can prioritize their preservation.
Greek Revival is one of 25 historic architectural styles described and illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
