Alabama Beauty Queen

This Alabama Beauty Queen is the Otis Cook House in Talladega. It spent many years in institutional use as a kindergarten during the 20th century and then experienced a period of vacancy and neglect before being purchased and restored by the current owners.

The Queen Anne style became popular in the later-19th century. Commonly of asymmetrical composition with a variety of textures and ornamentation, typical features of the style include patterned shingles and a wrap-around porch with turned and scroll-cut ornament, all of which are found on this wonderful Victorian era house.

Queen Anne houses were built from coast to coast. Technological advancements allowed the construction of houses with complex forms and elaborate detail at reasonable prices for middle-class buyers.

Knowing what is possible is the first step toward saving a house that has been neglected. “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” was written to help people learn what they need to know to undertake such a project.

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our shop, YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.
