Some Projects Require Bigger Equipment!

Some restoration projects require bigger equipment! This photo is from the restoration of Dark Harbor House. The 20′ tall columns on the house were severely deteriorated after more than a century of exposure to harsh weather conditions on a Maine island and had to be replaced. Fortunately, the owners and the contractor were up to the challenge.

The house, originally the George Philler Cottage, was designed in the Colonial Revival style by architect Fred Savage and built in 1896. Originally a summer cottage, it was later expanded and used as an inn for several decades. Water infiltration and related foundation issues had compromised the structure and required major intervention during the restoration.

Dark Harbor House is one of the 13 featured houses shot by noted architectural photographer David Clough and presented between the how-to chapters of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.” Numerous photos of the restoration process are shown along with historic and “before” images.

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our shop, YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.

Our shop also carries select preservation and restoration titles by other authors including “A Field Guide to American Houses” by Virginia McAlester. Save on cost and shipping with our multi-book combo packs!
