Built in 1886 for Julius H. Appleton, local architect Eugene C. Gardner designed the brownstone and wood house located in Springfield, MA.
The combination of materials places the house in both the masonry High Victorian Gothic style and its wood-framed equivalent, the Stick Style.
J.H. Appleton was a businessman involved in a number of different industries. In addition to his business involvements, he held several political offices, including serving for two years on the City Council and two years on the state Governor’s Council.
Understanding the architectural style of a house is the first step in planning a restoration-rehabilitation project. Twenty-five architectural styles and types are described and illustrated with hundreds of color photos in Chapter 2 of Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.
Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our shop, YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.
Our shop also carries select preservation and restoration titles by other authors, including A Field Guide to American Houses by Virginia McAlester.
