On the Road ~ NOLA Queen Anne BnB

On the Road ~ This sweet Queen Anne style New Orleans double shotgun house has been my home for the past several days.

The house is on Burgundy Street in the Marigny neighborhood and is operated as the Burgundy BnB by hosts Joe and Frederico. The historic paint treatment on the scalloped shingles in the gable was replicated when the house was restored. https://theburgundy.com/

The shotgun house form, which is a long single room wide house, and its double shotgun variant, is the city’s most common house type. The form came to Louisiana from Hati at the start of the 19th century. Today, New Orleans has the greatest concentration of shotgun houses in the world. Numerous period styles are represented in the detailing on the houses, and they are a key part of the city’s unique historic character.

Identifying the character-defining features of a house is the foundation of planning a good rehabilitation. The topic is covered in detail in “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our shop, YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.
