
Gorgeous Mission Style House in Jackson, MS. At the end of the nineteenth century, there was a turn away from the highly decorative styles of the late Victorian period. Machine-made and mass-produced ornamentation drew particular criticism, and a simpler aesthetic developed.
In architecture, the movement found expression in several romantic revival house styles that were built across the U.S. The Mission style was among them. Many of these houses were clad in stucco with clay tile roofs and arched openings.
