Mid-Century is historic. The residential architecture of the Post World War II period introduced new forms and materials to accommodate new ideas and ways of living. These mid-century houses are now considered historic. They are functionally suited to modern life and have period Mid-Century Modern design features.
The National Register of Historic Places guidance uses 50 years as the length of time typically needed for a building to be considered historic. While it seems odd to some that buildings built within our lifetimes might be historic, adults born in the 1980s and 90s are embracing “retro” houses like this Augusta, Maine, split-level ranch as historic and worthy of preservation.
“Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” covers houses built from c. 1730 to c. 1970 and includes the modern materials used in Mid-Century houses, which most restoration books do not address. The book includes several post-WWII styles and types among the 25 architectural styles described and illustrated in Chapter 2.
