Before and After ~ A Chicago Bungalow Kitchen

After photo by Dave Clough Photography.

Before and After ~ A Chicago Bungalow Kitchen. Designing compatible modern kitchens for historic houses can be a challenge. The owners of this Chicago Bungalow more than rose to the challenge!

They preserved and restored all the surviving original elements – white subway tile wainscot, hardwood floor, windows, and plaster – while adding new cabinets, countertops, appliances, and a reproduction green subway tile backsplash. The height of the tile indicated that the original kitchen did not have wall cabinets, so none were added.

It feels clean and contemporary while compatible with the historic 1920s house.

Designing compatible kitchens and baths for houses of all periods and styles is covered in depth in Chapter 3 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.” This house is one of 13 beautifully restored featured houses presented between the how-to chapters of the book.

Photographer David Clough traveled from Maine to New Mexico to shoot these wonderful houses for the book.

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our shop, YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.

Our shop also carries select preservation and restoration titles by other authors, including Virginia McAlester’s “A Field Guide to American Houses.”
