The best way to learn about historic houses is to look at them closely, and the most fun way to look at them closely is to do a puzzle showing a wonderful historic house! So, we made a unique and interesting collection of Historic House Puzzles for you to enjoy!

This lovely 1855 Italianate mansion in Portland, Maine, has seen better days. Although clearly neglected, the house remains solid and restorable. Hopefully it will end up in the hands of a new owner who can give it the investment it needs to shine again before the deterioration gets much worse. An almost identical mansion stands next door to it in fine condition. The houses were built for Andrew and Samuel Spring, uncle and nephew who were successful Portland, Maine merchants dealing in Argentinian tallow and beef.
The architect was Charles A. Alexander, designer of several other wonderful Italianate buildings in the city. Looking past the neglect, the house appears to be in largely original condition on the exterior. It even retains its cast iron and granite fence. Restoring it would be a dream project for many old house lovers.
“Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” was written to help people who want to save historic houses, from cottages to mansions. It will help you to restore a house with sensitivity to its historic character-defining features while making it functional for life in the 21st century.
